Life has been wild this past year.

Made a move from my comfort zone of NJ to the unknown city of Boston. Came here with no friends, ready to begin the journey of my life.

I have since made about 50 new friends (according to facebook), of which 10 or so are good friends, in the sense that we talk often and hang out somewhat regularly.

I’ve broken a few hearts, had my own heart broken a few times.

I’ve been promoted at work within the first 6 months of my professional career.

I’ve been given two raises within 6 months of each other.

I’ve been able to purchase my first new car all on my own.

I own some really cool stuff.

I’ve been fortunate enough to make some cool connections and pursue my photography hobby; taking it farther than I’ve thought possible. I’m still a nobody, but I’m working at it.

I’ve met some amazing people by being weird; I’ve traveled on the local mass transit system, The T, sans pants. Yes, that’s right, I rode the T in my underwear.

I’ve gone on blind dates, I’ve gone on dates with friends of friends, I’ve gone on dates with coworkers.

I’ve met someone new. She’s amazing and I’m hoping it works out.

I’ve been in pain, physical pain mostly. I’ve gotten my shoulder taken care of, or at least I’m in the process of getting it taken care of. It feels better than it has in years, but its still not perfect.

My best friends mother passed away. This contributed to a massive depression which lasted about a month.

I’ve lost a few people in my life for other reasons.

I’ve been a shoulder to cry on for a very special friend who found out the person she was falling for was gay.

I’ve had major issues with sleeping and adapting to the work cycle.

I’ve been taking ambien for a few months to combat my insomnia. It sorta works.

I’ve taken up a new hobby or three, one of which is billiards.

I’ve gone to tons of concerts, most of which rocked my socks off.

I haven’t updated my blog with a legitimate post of any substance for over a year. Here’s the update you’ve probably not been waiting for.

When trying to install or upgrade a perl module using cpan, you may get an error stating that the module you are trying to install “is only available with the XS version”

This error tends to rear its ugly head after you have updated perl. The module Scalar::List::Utils contains both an XS and a pure perl version. Many other modules rely on the XS version in order to function. This is where you run into that error.

Fortunately the fix is quite simple! Simply reinstall Scalar::List::Utils manually.

wget http://cpan.netnitco.net/authors/id/G/GB/GBARR/Scalar-List-Utils-1.19.tar.gz
tar zxvf Scalar-List-Utils-1.19.tar.gz
cd Scalar-List-Utils-1.19
perl Makefile.PL
make test install

Once this is done, try performing the installation of the module that failed with the “is only available with the XS version” error. It should now complete successfully!

There’s an issue with Openfire (formerly known as Wildfire - the open source Jabber-based IM server) and large amounts of users. The Openfire server stops accepting new connections when approximately 1000+ concurrent users are logged in. This issue seems to be caused by a maximum open file limit per process being hit. I figured out the following solution after a half day or so of researching and testing. This applies to Fedora Core 7 Linux, but should work with any Linux-based OS capable of running Openfire.

To permanently increase the maximum open file limits:

vi /etc/security/limits.conf

Append the following lines to the end of the file:

*                hard    nofile          64000
root hard nofile 64000
daemon hard nofile 64000

A reboot is required for these changes to take effect. I’m not sure of the issues this may cause with the OS, but so far I haven’t run into any.

Use at your own risk!

I was having issues getting Flock to be my default browser in Vista. Flock, which is an awesome browser based on the Firefox browser, was set as my default browser within Vista. However, when clicking on links and whatnot in emails, IMs and RSS feeds on Trillian, etc, the websites were opening in Internet Explorer (IE7). This is not good.

I tried going to default programs, removing IE7 from being the default for everything, setting Flock as the default for everything, setting Flock as the default for .url and many more.

After scouring the depths of the internet for more than 30 minutes, I found a really simple solution.

Press the Windows+R key (or go to Start -> Run) and enter the following:

flock.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser

or for Firefox users:

firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser

You may or may not have to specify the path to the executable. You can find this by right-clicking the shortcut for the browser and going to properties. Copy the Target field completely and paste that into the Run dialog. For example:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Flock\flock\flock.exe” -silent -setDefaultBrowser

Notice how I kept the quotes and there’s a space between the last quote and -silent.

Hopefully this will help some of you out there having the same issue!

A close friend of mine who <strike>works</strike> worked, at the local Circuit City in Paramus, NJ just got laid off today. Not normally news, however, Circuit City of Paramus laid off at least 6 employees who have been with the company for at least four years; most were there for over six. Apparently this isn’t just a Paramus lay off; Circuit City is laying off people nationally. With over 620 stores, if they lay off an average of 6 people per store, we’re talking 3,720 people.

It seems as though Circuit City wants to get rid of their higher paid employees to save money. Sounds good on paper, saving money is always nice, however, they’re also losing their most knowledgeable people. This lay off will probably hurt the company more than it helps. A large portion of the people left at the Paramus store are seasonal employees and teenagers with their first job. Not exactly the ideal employees to help a blundering company.

Other articles I might write down the line will have to do with basic programming principals. I guess that is all for now.

Oh Hillary, how I love thee.

Dear Mr. Armstrong:

Thank you for sharing with me your concerns about the proposed filibuster in the United States Senate regarding the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to serve as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. As I explained from the Senate floor, I believe the key to American progress has been the ever-expanding circle of freedom and opportunity. If you look at Judge Alito’s statements and his record, it is clear that Judge Alito would narrow that circle while endangering our nation’s fundamental system of checks and balances.

This is a vote of tremendous significance. History will show that Judge Alito’s nomination is the tipping point against constitutionally-based freedoms and protections we cherish as individuals and as a nation. He would roll back decades of progress, and roll over when confronted with an administration too willing to play fast and loose with the rules. Because I do not think Judge Alito would advance the principles Americans hold most dear, I oppose his nomination and support efforts to block his confirmation.

Sincerely yours,
Hillary Rodham Clinton
